My Cooking Challenge: Inspired by the Julie/Julia Project

Have you ever sat down to watch a movie, only to get inspired by something you were watching? Well, that was me when I decided to watch Julie & Julia with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. The story is about a woman who used cooking as a way to ‘get away’ from her soul-killing job. Embarking on a daring project; she vowed to prepare all 524 recipes in Julia Childs’ cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

Julia Child herself, having conquered French cuisine with passion, fearlessness, and plenty of butter!

This got me to thinking… I need something to focus on… I need something that will challenge me… I enjoy cooking! Since the whole Julia Child endeavor was already taken, what could I do?

The Challenge was Right in Front of Me

Retiring from her job means that mom and I will be tripping over each other 24/7.

That in itself is not the challenge. Mom and I have worked and lived together before. The original entrepreneurial pioneer, mom ran a state regulated daycare out of our home while I was growing up. One of the first in our state, this allowed her to be at home for her children, and still bring home an income! — It was after a horrific 3-month stint at a local hamburg joint, that I was begging mom to let me come work for her! For the next 5 years, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we worked and lived together under the same roof!

No, the challenge, as the cook, is to prepare meals that will not be a gastronomical nightmare for me, yet still be delicious enough to pass mothers fussy palate!

The Challenge: 365 days. — 1095 meals created with unprocessed foods that are easily digested.

The Contender: Sheri Dietz. Modern homesteader by day, returning to her roots and cooking from scratch. Risking her relationship with her mother, she has signed on for an insane assignment. How far it will go, no one knows.
